Malonate Broth is recommended for differentiation of Enterobacter and Escherichia on the basis of malonate utilization. Malonate utilizers change the colour of the medium to blue due to bromothymol blue, pH indicator in the medium. Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella Arizonae are known malonate utilizers, the colour of medium changes to dark blue due to malonate utilization. Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhimurium are malonate negative.
